Welcome

Hi there!

This is the blog for my new book, 'Cormorant Wood Unsung', a racy take on life in the mid twenty-first century.

Now, I don't know if you find most sci-fi is rather too advanced to be believed. It's a bit like '2001 A Space Odyssey'. Even in 1969 or so, it was a bit far-fetched to have all this stuff happening within 32 years. I expect that I may be pilloried for making a similar mistake. However, I haven't tried to make it too unbelievable, I hope. We have the International Space Station now and there's talk about missions to both the Moon and Mars within the next twenty years or so. I have only 'created' a small(ish) colony on the former. The settlement on Mars is still in its infancy and only receives a passing reference.

The main meat of this novel is how, in some ways, life is much the same. I haven't made a big thing about global warming. Thirty-five years ago, we were all going to hell in a handcart because we were overdue for an Ice Age! I believe we still are. Although I can't claim any scientific credentials and I admit that the signs are indisputable that there is global warming, it still seems a) rather sudden; b) conflicting with results from NASA that (allegedly) show things have been getting cooler over the last ten years and c) signs that there is also global warming on Mars and Pluto.

Meanwhile, our intrepid heroes are caught in a world of power struggles - what changes? It is the classic tale of the little man up against it. That little man is Mitchell Strang. He is a miner off-world on Europa, Jupiter's moon. His stint (or 'hitch') as a miner has come to an end. He and his colleagues and heading back to Earth aboard a space freighter when they make their chance discovery while using the ship's VR facilities to have fun and get reacclimatized to Earth gravity. That chance discovery is of an abduction that took place in Paris only weeks earlier. Then, they discover that the victim has been murdered!

I hope that this starts to make your interest prick up. To find out more, follow the link to Lulu. You can get the book at a ridiculously cheap price, especially if you download it (there's no postal charge and no delay).

I hope you enjoy reading it and please feel free to post your thoughts - I would welcome any comments.

The sequel will be coming out soon!

Best wishes

Jack Powers
